Job Description

Organizational settingFAO is a specialized agency of the UN that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. FAO's goal is to achieve food security for all and ensure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With 195 Members (194 countries and the European Union), FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide.The main aim of the FAO Country Offices, which are headed by FAO Representatives (FAORs), is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.Specific Activities Of The Country Offices Include

  • Implementing FAO's field projects and participating in the development of the Field Programme by identifying'' and formulating new projects and liaising with local donor representatives.
  • Helping governments to prevent and assess the damage of disasters and assisting them in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the agricultural sector.
  • Carrying out public awareness activities and support important FAO campaigns such as the World Food Day (WFD).
  • Providing assistance to technical and investment missions from FAO headquarters and from Regional or Subregional Offices to the country.
  • Serving as a channel for FAO's services to governments and other partners (donors, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), research institutions, etc.).
  • Keeping FAO informed of major social and economic developments in the country and monitoring the situation of the agriculture sector in the country.
  • Acting as FAO Representative to host governments and all partners involved in FAO activities.

Reporting LinesThe Young Professional Officer (Climate Change and Natural Resources Management) reports to the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme) and collaborates closely with the relevant Climate Change Project leads in close collaboration with other programme colleagues.Technical FocusThe Young Professional Officer (Climate Change and Natural Resources Management) assists with the development and implementation of FAO programmes and activities related to climate change and natural resources management in Nepal. More specifically, he/she will assist the project leads to manage climate change adaptation, mitigation and resilience interventions within FAO Nepal's agriculture, forestry and sustainable natural resource management sectors, aligning with government priorities and in line with the priorities set forth by FAO Nepal's Country Programming Framework (CPF) (2023-2027).Key ResultsResearch, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of assigned projects, products and services.Key Functions

  • Analyses relevant technical social, economic, environmental, and technology information, data and/or statistics for input in various documents.
  • Maintains records and updates databases and web pages.
  • Provides technical support to various projects.
  • Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.
  • Participates in the organization and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.

Specific Functions

  • Assists in the coordination and implementation of ongoing (National, Regional and Global) climate change-related programmes and projects in the areas of agriculture, forestry, and natural resource management.
  • Supports the preparation of concept notes and project proposals in the areas of climate change and natural resource management, as well as related resource mobilization efforts.
  • Supports the programme leads in monitoring projects, including compiling inputs for revisions, tracking expenditures and resources, and flagging potential discrepancies against budget lines.

Assists in maintaining the completeness and quality of data and documentation in FAO's corporate systems for assigned operational field projects and activities.

  • Participates and assists in supporting the development of partnerships with relevant organizations and stakeholders, including government agencies, UN agencies, NGOs, and the private sector.

Participates and assists in the organization of policy dialogues, workshops, and consultation meetings in coordination with the programme team and stakeholders.

  • Contributes to stakeholder engagement and awareness-raising activities, including preparation of communication and outreach materials; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in areas such as agriculture, climate change, environmental science, natural resource management or any other fields.
  • One year of relevant experience in supporting including exposure to the implementation of climate change and natural resource management projects and programmes.
  • Working knowledge of English (proficiency - Level C) and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Extent and relevance of experience in related fields such as climate change, natural resource management, food and nutrition security, agricultural development and disaster risk reduction
  • Extent and relevance of experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical/scientific documents and in organizing meetings and workshops
  • Extent and relevance of experience in supporting partnerships with UN agencies, NGOs as well as donors and government institutions and agencies
  • Working knowledge of another FAO language would be an asset
  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable.
