About Nepal Digital Systems

Nepal Digital Systems is an engineering firm based in Lalitpur specializing in embedded systems, IoT product design, and deep technology. We design and ship production hardware and firmware for clients in Nepal and abroad, covering wireless mesh networks, industrial control, connected consumer devices, and payment systems.

Our engineers work on complete products rather than isolated modules. An intern here will see a device move from schematic and bring-up through firmware, protocol integration, field testing, and production.

Role Summary

We are looking for firmware engineering interns who want to build embedded products on real hardware. You will join a small team of engineers, work on live client and internal projects under the guidance of a senior engineer, and take ownership of well-defined firmware tasks from the first month.

This is a hands-on role. You will spend your time writing C, reading datasheets, and debugging on the bench.

What You Will Do

  • Write and debug firmware in C for ESP32, STM32, nRF52 etc. class microcontrollers
  • Bring up and configure peripherals including UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, GPIO, and timers
  • Implement and test features on top of FreeRTOS, including task design, queues, semaphores, and timers
  • Work with wireless connectivity such as BLE, BLE Mesh, ESP-NOW, and Wi-Fi
  • Integrate wired and wireless communication protocols such as Modbus RTU over RS485, LoRa, and standard IP networking services
  • Debug at the hardware level using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and serial tracing
  • Write test procedures and maintain clear technical documentation for the firmware you produce
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and sprint planning with the engineering team

Requirements

  • Bachelor level study in Electronics, Computer, Electrical, or a closely related engineering discipline, either in the final year or recently completed
  • Working knowledge of the C programming language, including pointers, structures, and bit manipulation
  • Basic understanding of microcontroller architecture and common peripherals
  • Familiarity with at least one development platform such as ESP-IDF, Arduino, STM32 HAL, Zephyr, or the Nordic SDK
  • Ability to read a schematic and a component datasheet
  • Comfort working on Linux and with Git
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and work through difficult bugs methodically

Preferred

  • Personal, academic, or hackathon projects involving microcontrollers, published on GitHub or demonstrable in an interview
  • Exposure to FreeRTOS or any real time operating system
  • Experience with BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa, or other wireless technologies
  • Basic Python for tooling, test scripts, and automation
  • Understanding of version control workflows in a team setting

We do not expect candidates to meet every point above. Strong fundamentals in C and clear evidence of curiosity about embedded systems matter more than a long list of technologies.

What You Will Gain

  • A monthly stipend
  • Direct mentorship from senior firmware engineers working on production systems
  • Exposure to the full product cycle, from prototype to manufacturing
  • Practical experience with commercial IoT stacks including BLE Mesh and Matter
  • A written performance review and a completion certificate at the end of the internship
  • Priority consideration for a full-time firmware engineering position at NDS

How to Apply

Submit your application to [email protected] with the subject line Firmware Engineering Intern Application:

  • Your curriculum vitae in PDF format
  • Links to any relevant projects, repositories, or portfolio work
  • A short note, no more than one paragraph, describing an embedded project you have worked on and one problem you had to solve in it

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a technical discussion followed by a short practical exercise.

Nepal Digital Systems is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
