Position Title:  Senior GIS Assistant

Duty Station:  Kathmandu, Nepal

Classification:  General Service Staff, Ungraded

Type of Appointment: Special Short Term Ungraded, six months

Context: 

Under the overall supervision of Chief of Mission, project guidance and supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer and direct supervision of Migration Health Officer, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing standard support in the daily implementation of the COVID-19 project in Nepal.

The COVID-19 project aims at strengthening the capacity of the government of Nepal for the migrant sensitive preparedness and response towards COVID-19.

In particular, s/he will carry out the following duties and responsibilities:

Core Functions / Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct regular trips to the project sites; verify process of information collection, verify data and report any deviation from Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and protocols.
  • Perform data manipulation and cleaning to convert data into its desired form.
  • Provide technical support to analyze spatial data gathered through mapping software in COVID-19 project.
  • Assist in the designing of digital maps with geographic data and other various data sets.
  • Discover patterns and trends of people’s movement through spatial mapping of data.
  • Create “shapefiles” to merge topographical data with external data by layering external data over a topographical map.
  • Assist in the preparation of project related reports for IOM and donors.
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering, GIS geographic information systems training and certification, surveying or related discipline from an accredited academic institution with four years of relevant work experience; or
  • High School degree in above field with six years of relevant work experience.

Experience

  • Past experience in project activities tracking, monitoring and reporting;
  • Ability to use own initiative and work under pressure with minimum supervision;
  • Excellent computer skills – Word, Excel, Internet, GIS Programming/ Spatial mapping software;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Attention to detail and ability to organize;
  • Self-motivated and objective driven;
  • The past experience in public health or migration health related activities would be an advantage.
