United Mission to Nepal (UMN) is an international development organisation that aims to enable the poorest people living in poverty to transform their lives, leading towards the fullness of life. As we serve the people of Nepal, multicultural teams of Nepali and volunteer expatriate staff work alongside local organisations in eight districts through six clusters and two hospitals, building partnerships that lead to healthy, dignified, and empowered individuals and transformed communities.

We are seeking the following four voluntary positions (with no salary and benefits).

Position: Planning, Monitoring, Strategy and Policy Advisor

Reports to: Unit Lead – MEAL-CC Unit
Required no.: 1 (Kathmandu based with travel to clusters as required)
Objective of the Job: Advise and support UMN’s overall policy and strategic directions, Programme teams in strengthening systems for effective bottom-up programme development, financial and safeguarding compliance, and technical quality.

  • To build capacity towards strengthening the participatory design, monitoring, evaluation, and evidence- based learning system within UMN programmes and projects with its partners.
  • Support Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL Unit) to build the capacity of UMN and local partners to integrate learning, accountability, and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems in all UMN’s work, ensure that effective-participatory monitoring and evaluation is used in evidence-based design and implementation of UMN programmes and facilitate cross-teams learning.
  • Adapt impact approaches (Outcome Mapping, Outcome Harvesting and Ripple Effect Mapping principles and steps) for use in monitoring and evaluation within UMN including the development of tools to resource participatory processes. Support theoretical reflections on the team’s practical participatory experiences.
  • Support development of a UMN culture focused on understanding, observing and documenting behaviour changes.
  • Support application of Outcome Monitoring.
  • Clarify and strengthen MEAL Unit to Cluster relationship and working modality including document and data management.
  • Support Grant Management Unit to ensure the quality of donor reports and proposals are in line with UMN’s strategy, capacitate UMN and partner staff on writing reports and developing proposals and apply/propose changes from learning.

Position: Climate Change and DRR Advisor

Reports to: Executive Director
Required no.: 1 (Kathmandu based with travel to clusters as required)
Objective of the Job: Advise and support UMN’s overall Climate Resilient and Disaster Response and Risk reduction (DRR) work and provide inputs/skills to UMN staff as well as local partner staff to develop and implement relevant DRR plans.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Work with responsible teams to ensure that each UMN office has up-to-date disaster plans aligned with the local government.
  • Support (esp. in capacity building aspect) Cluster Team Leaders, Cluster Disaster Management focal persons and partners in planning for disaster response in their geographic area.
  • Ensure relief interventions comply with UMN Relief Policy & Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan, appropriate international humanitarian standards and Nepal Government protocol.
  • Be part of the UN & Association of International NGOs (AIN) related Cluster groups.
  • Contribute to project design and proposal writing for Climate Change and Disaster Management projects in clusters.
  • Work with UMN’s Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL Unit) in monitoring disaster management indicators of the Strategic Plan.
  • Contribute to local and global learning by ensuring that good practice at all levels is documented and disseminated.
  • Ensure UMN remains up to date on issues relating to climate change impacts, disaster management, resilience, and on best practices globally.

Position: Grant Management Advisor

Reports to: Unit Lead – Grant Management Unit
Required no.: 1 (Kathmandu based with travel to clusters as required)
Objective of the Job: Maintain strong top-level communication and relationships with international stakeholders, advise on top-level strategy issues, and mobilise international funds for the organisation.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Provide hands-on technical support, coaching, mentoring, providing feedback and editing proposals as appropriate. The ultimate aim of all activities should be that Cluster, Programme Support, and local partner staff are able to take over all responsibilities on their own. Strengthen and develop the capacities of the staff of UMN and local partner NGOs to produce high-quality, competitive concept notes, proposals, and reports.
  • Support to design integrated programmes and projects that consider UMN’s strategic direction, cluster strategies, policies, and cross-cutting issues.
  • Strengthen capacities in relevant teams to formulate Theory of Change, Log-Frames or Outcome Mapping based result chains, budgets, and Gantt charts as per the requirement of a specific donor.
  • Strengthen the writing and editing skills of relevant staff, increasing the accuracy, clarity, readability, and consistency of their written outputs.
  • Support the Grant Management Unit Lead in keeping abreast of global/national development priorities and supporting/funding partners’ priorities, in close collaboration with the Funding Management Team.
  • Support the Grant Management Unit Lead and Funding Management Team in exploring new funding opportunities to address development needs identified by the clusters.
  • Support the due diligence and quality assurance process for those opportunities.
  • Advise cluster and relevant team on all issues related to donor contract management and donor compliance.

Position: Programme Development Advisor

Reports to: Thematic Lead – Peace and Protection
Required No.: 1 (Kathmandu based with travel to clusters as required)
Objective of the Job: Advise and support UMN’s Programme Team, especially, in the areas of youth engagement towards ending harmful practices including domestic violence, encourage community dialogues and strengthen the mediation centers along with the local judicial systems.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Identify the capacity gap of the project team and coordinate capacity-building interventions. Work closely with UMN and partners’ staff for capacity building and engagement of youth for addressing harmful traditional practices; child marriage, gender discrimination and domestic violence.
  • Advise and coach Project Managers, Officers, and Coordinators on experiences of dialogue and mediation following the government norms.
  • Ensure that experiences of ending violence including violence against women and girls are underpinned and documented with scientific research results.
  • Support cluster and the project team to implement the project that aims to reduce violence and disputes in the community toward social harmony.
  • Support project staff partner organisations to increase their capacity for monitoring project impacts.
  • As needed, work together with the Programme Support Thematic Leads and Programme Partner Teams to ensure quality project design, implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Advise and participate in the strategic functions of Technical Forum and Programme Support Team.
  • Regularly visit staff based in Cluster Offices to provide support, guidance, and coaching in project management, especially in the impact orientation outcome.
  • Network and coordinate with relevant institutions, line agencies and networks for learning sharing opportunities and better relationships or cooperation.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualifications of master’s level or equivalent in relevant areas.
  • Mature individual with significant leadership, development, and proposal development experience.
  • Rich Work Experience in the relevant fields.
  • Committed to building MEAL systems and funding strategies within UMN.
  • A person with a passion for advocating for the rights of poor and marginalised people.
  • Understanding and experience of working in Nepal.
