Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) is a national network of peace and human rights non-governmental organizations in Nepal. It started as a loose, informal forum in June 2001 and was registered with the government of Nepal as a nonprofit and non-political network in December 2002. Currently, COCAP has 43 member organizations. It has a secretariat in each of the provinces. It has a large number of volunteers who actively involve themselves in the various aspects of its works. COCAP aims to provide a common space for its members, volunteers and friends to collectively engage in the pursuit of peace, human rights and justice in Nepal. It organizes national/regional level campaigns and programs on the issues of conflict transformation and peace building, transitional justice and social security/protection in coordination with its member organizations and other like-minded organizations.

Background

COCAP’s Nepal Monitor project has been running for over five years as the most comprehensive system for mapping violent incidents and non-violent political contestation across Nepal. Our online platform is open source and we have over 3000 subscribers receiving regular digests based on the information which we update daily. Having upgraded our system and updated our mapping structure from late 2016 we have a range of data from before that point which is yet to be integrated into our dataset.For this, Nepal Monitor requires following three positions based in Kathmandu.

1.Position: Program Officer (1)

Job Description

This position will be mostly engaged in updating Nepal monitor’s data before 2016 to make it compatible with the new structure in which extensive variables are recorded for each incident, and congruent with the remapped federal boundaries of Nepal. It will be the most senior of three new positions created to address our backlog of pre 2016 data and will involve responsibility for supervising two other staffs.

Updating the data set will entail:

  • Writing short summary descriptions for each report in Nepali and English
  • Coding different variables for incidents by following the coding guideline
  • Mapping old VDCs location to their corresponding local units formed in Federal Nepal
  • Conducting follow-up with District Focal Persons on local newspaper reports to verify incidents with district focal persons and local journalists
  • Supervising program interns to undertake data update
  • Performing quality check on coding and language in reports
  • Contributing to the draft of summary reports and analysis conducted using the wider NMP dataset
  • Assisting in monthly collation of data-set
  • Performing other tasks as required

Ideal candidate’s profile

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, social science or other relevant fields and at least 3 years of work experience in relevant field(s)
  • Experience in conflict analysis, violence monitoring, and human rights
  • Some background in journalism/law is an advantage

Skills & Qualities

  • Excellent understanding of Nepal’s Socio-political dynamics
  • Excellent command over both English and Nepali language with experience in editing and proofreading documents
  • Proficient in Nepali text entry using Preeti and/or Unicode
  • Strong analytical skills, able to bring new ideas into the organization
  • Extremely detail-oriented
  • Willing to work in a complex sociocultural environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enjoy to work as part of a team
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision and meet deadlines

Duration: 5 months fixed term contract

Salary: Rs 40,000 per month 

2.Position: Program Assistant (2)

Job Description

Under the supervision of Program Officer these positions will assist in updating Nepal monitor’s data before 2016 to make it compatible with the new structure in which extensive variables are recorded for each incident, and congruent with the remapped federal boundaries of Nepal.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting Program Officer in coding different variables for incidents by following the coding guideline coding
  • Translating reports from Nepali to English and vice-versa
  • Coding different variables for incidents by following the coding guideline
  • Mapping old VDC location to their corresponding local units formed in Federal Nepal
  • Assisting Program Officer in meeting different deadlines with regard to back-coding and collation of dataset
  • Performing other tasks as required

Ideal candidate’s profile

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree/running in journalism, social science or other relevant fields and at least 2 years of work experience in relevant field(s)
  • Experience in translating documents from Nepali to English and vice-versa
  • Some background in journalism is an advantage

Skills & Qualities

  • Excellent command over both English and Nepali language with experience in editing and proofreading documents
  • Proficient in Nepali text entry using Preeti and/or Unicode
  • Extremely detail-oriented
  • Willing to work in a complex political and sociocultural environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enjoy to work as part of a team
  • Able to follow instructions and develop familiarity with online information systems and databases quickly

Duration: 5 months fixed term contract

Salary: Rs 25,000 per month

Please note, under the current conditions these positions will be home based until further notice. A reliable internet connection will be necessary to accommodate this. COCAP will cover reasonable expenses for the monthly cost of internet for the period of the job contract that is carried out under lockdown.
