Nepal's Job Market by Province: Where the Jobs Actually Are

Job openings outside Kathmandu are real and searchable — here is how Nepal's job market actually breaks down by province and city, and how to search for roles near you instead of only in the capital.

Search "jobs in Butwal" or "jobs in Biratnagar" and it can feel like every real opportunity in Nepal is in Kathmandu Valley. That is not actually true — it is often a search problem, not a jobs problem: many employers post to a specific city or district, but that listing never surfaces for someone searching by city name if the platform they used only indexes by broad category.

Nepal's seven provinces, in brief

Nepal is organised into seven provinces, each with its own major urban centres beyond the capital:

  • Koshi Province — Biratnagar, Dharan, Itahari, Birtamode
  • Madhesh Province — Janakpur, Birgunj, Rajbiraj
  • Bagmati Province — Kathmandu Valley, Hetauda, Banepa
  • Gandaki Province — Pokhara, Baglung
  • Lumbini Province — Butwal, Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa (Siddharthanagar)
  • Karnali Province — Surkhet, Jumla
  • Sudurpashchim Province — Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar

Why jobs outside Kathmandu are easy to miss

Government offices, provincial and local-level government roles, NGO field postings, hospitals, banks with branch networks, and manufacturing/industrial employers all hire heavily outside the capital — but a role based in Dharan or Nepalgunj is only useful to you if you can actually find it by searching for that city, not just by browsing a general list and hoping to spot it.

How to search smarter

  • Search by city name directly, not just by job title — "accountant Butwal" narrows results in a way "accountant" alone cannot.
  • Check government and provincial vacancy notices separately — many local-level government postings are announced through Lok Sewa Aayog's provincial offices, not just the national notice board (see our Lok Sewa Aayog guide for how that process works).
  • Don't rule out relocation for the right role — if you are open to moving, searching by province rather than one specific city widens your real options considerably.
  • Revisit searches regularly — postings outside Kathmandu often move faster (smaller applicant pools per role), so a city you checked with no results last month may look different today.
A job market that looks empty from Kathmandu can look completely different from Dharan, Butwal, or Nepalgunj — the roles exist; the search has to be pointed at the right place.
