Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Resettlement Officer and overall supervision of the Head of Sub-Office, the incumbent will be responsible for performing the following functions and responsibilities:

  • Stay abreast of political, social, economic and cultural developments that have an impact on the protection environment.
  • Consistently apply International and National Laws and applicable UN/UNHCR and IASC policy, standards and codes of conduct.
  • Provide advice on protection issues to person of concern.
  • Contribute to a country-level child protection plan as part of the protection strategy.
  • Monitor Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all protection/solutions activities.
  • Manage individual protection cases including those on child protection.
  • Assist in identifying durable solutions for the largest possible number of persons of concern.
  • Participate in initiatives to capacitate authorities, relevant institutions and NGOs to strengthen child protection.
  • Collect and compile all existing information on the unaccompanied/separated children using progress and assigns the work to relevant colleagues, including liaising with other departments (community service, protection, field staff etc.).
  • Maintain data/files of all best interest determination cases and updated individual case on the database.
  • Conduct interviews with the child, the child’s guardian(S), teachers, and other caregivers.
  • Make regular visits to the child’s hut in the camp to study the dynamics of the relationship (s) of the child with his/her caregivers.
  • Complete the Best Interest Determination Registration and Best Interest Determination Report Forms as per UNHCR’s Guidelines for Best Interest Determination Panel discussions.
  • After the completion of the Best Interest Determination, ensures regular follow-ups with the separated children to identify any changes in his/her situation and coordinate with the respective units.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Essential minimum Qualifications and Competencies Required:

  • Education: Completion of secondary school . Additional certificate/training in International Law, political
  • Science or related field is required (University degree in Social Science or related fields is desirable)
  • Job experience relevant to the function: 6 years
  • Thorough knowledge of child protection and the understanding of child rights, as well as protection risks such as SGBV and trafficking of children.
  • Computer skills (MS Office, including Excel, Word, Power Point).
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written/oral/comprehension).

Desired qualification and competencies:

Minimum 3 years of experience in refugee camp and familiarity with the resettlement program; Good interviewing skills especially with children and adolescents due to sensitive situation unaccom panied and separated children are; Solid understanding of the practical implications of the different stages in child and adolescent development; Completion of UNHCR learning programmes or specific training relevant to functions of position; knowledge of Administrative/Financial rules, procedures, processes in the context of UNHCR offices and Field operations; knowledge of MSRP.
